Let's face it, menopause can turn our lives upside-down. Our bodies are changing, our hormones are going crazy and sometimes it feels like the hot flashes and extra pounds are taking over. And when we're just looking for answers, the messages we get from medical professionals, the media---and even our own friends and family---can be a little confusing. Heidi Houston hopes to shed some light on the mystery with her film Hot Flash Havoc. After her own personal experiences with early menopause, Heidi was frustrated with the same mixed messages. So she decided to do something about it. She reached out to the menopause community, interviewed over 30 experts in the field, and gathered personal stories from real women. Heidi and her team hope to change the story about menopause and create a dialogue with women and medical experts around the country.
Does midlife ever make you feel “too old?” Whatever our age, it seems like we carry the weight of the world on our shoulders while life is passing us by. We’re too old to go out and have fun. Too old for that dress. Too old to wear the bright red lipstick, even though it’s the perfect color. It’s time to stop hiding, worrying, and simply existing. And if you need a little inspiration, check out this clip from the documentary Fabulous Fashionistas. The film follows the lives of six women in their 70s and 80s who are redefining their ages in style. Without botox or plastic surgery. And while all of the ladies are well beyond menopause, their attitudes towards life are incredible. They all seem to have discovered their “fabulous”--- that elusive quality that makes us distinctive and special.
A few years ago, we had an opportunity to interview Dr. Tara Allmen, one of America’s leading experts in women’s midlife health and author of a new book, Menopause Confidential. Dr. Allmen is a Board Certified Gynecologist and NAMS Certified Menopause Practitioner. She recently released Menopause Confidential to help women everywhere take control of their health and flourish in midlife. And it’s more than just a clinical guide to understanding your menopause symptoms. Dr. Allmen shows you how midlife can be the beginning of the happiest years of your life. We caught up with Dr. Allmen, but this time we let members from our online community, Menopause ChitChat, ask all the questions.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned after seven years of interviewing experts, building a menopause forum and living through it myself, there’s just not a one-size-fits-all solution. Menopause is complicated. Our bodies are going through major changes. And if all of the physical menopause symptoms weren’t enough, there’s the emotional baggage that comes with it. You know, the way it changes your relationships with your family and friends. Let’s face it. Menopause can be an exhausting and lonely place.
